A Modest Proposal: The Perfect Plan

Warning: This is meant to be satirical. Please do not take this as a serious representation of my beliefs or values.

This proposal offers a single solution for two serious issues facing the United States: finding a more sustainable source of energy and rising obesity rates.

Last week in class we discussed the issues surrounding the Chesapeake Energy company and the Marcellus Shale Formation. Although natural gas offers a much cleaner form of energy than other, more conventional forms of energy, there is still debate regarding the safety and ethical implications of the drilling process because of the effects it can have on the environment as well as the people living near the wells.

It’s no secret that Americans are viewed by some around the world as gluttonous pigs and it is hard to disagree when looking at the stats. I’m not sure if it is all of the fast food that our society has become inundated with or a general lack of motivation to live healthier lives, but one thing is clear; there needs to be a stronger emphasis put on exercise and healthy living.

Well, I have an idea that might help solve the energy crisis and make our increasingly obese population healthier in the process. I think that every household in the United States should have a stationary bicycle in their house that is connected to a generator and a larger power grid. In order to power the residence, the occupants must ride the stationary bike for a certain number of hours. The power generated from each bicycle would be transferred through the power grid to a central hub that distributes the power to the rest of the community. This would provide an environmentally clean and safe form of electric energy. As an added benefit, people could incorporate an exercise regimen into their daily routine and lead healthier, more active lives. Also, people wouldn’t have to pay their electric bills. Really, there is no limit to the potential benefits of the plan. I don’t know how we’ll do it and there will be some serious hurdles to conquer, but if we can figure it out we will have changed the world as we know it. It really is the Perfect Plan

  1. This certainly does seem to be a universal solution. This would also solve the global warming crisis. We wouldn’t have to worry as much about the problem with energy emissions as before. Also, people would appreciate the energy they use more, leading to a more thankful and productive society!
